My name is Kamilla and I am 34 years old. I am a trained clothing designer and decorator/Visual Merchandiser, and currently, I am a stay-at-home parent. I am a mother of three children: Theodor, 6 years old; Martha, 3 years old; and Esther, 2 years old. I am married to Claus, who is a trained carpenter and subsequently obtained a degree in Civil Engineering. In 2016, we bought a classic masonry villa from 1932 located in North Zealand, which we have been renovating continuously. We do most of the work ourselves and renovate the house with respect for its age and character, adding a fresh and personal touch.
The choice of stone was definitely not easy, but we ended up going with Lindanäs due to its beautiful color and marbling pattern. It is an elegant and timeless tile that brings nature indoors with its small fossils scattered throughout. Our biggest challenge is definitely finding time and space with three young children whom we prioritize spending our free time with, which leaves little time for renovating. However, as they grow older and more independent, it becomes easier. Additionally, we are both perfectionists and prefer to do things ourselves so that we can have them exactly as we want, and finding the time can also be a challenge.
What are the biggest challenges of renovating? What are your best tips?
Our biggest challenge is definitely finding time and space with three young children whom we prioritize spending our free time with, which leaves little time for renovating. However, as they grow older and more independent, it becomes easier. Additionally, we are both perfectionists and prefer to do things ourselves so that we can have them exactly as we want, and finding the time can also be a challenge.
What was particularly challenging about the guest toilet was that we didn't have a complete plan when we started, only the basic layout and the chosen tiles. It took extra time to find the perfect solution for a sink that had storage space and was small enough for the small room. Furthermore, it took time to find the right solution for a mirror. The mirror we ended up with was found as an antique, and such things cannot be rushed. It often requires a great deal of patience to arrive at the perfect solutions. But as they say, Rome wasn't built in a day.
My best tips for renovating would be to always start with the soul and history of the house/home, trust your intuition, and not be dictated by trends. Build a bridge between contrasts, for example, raw and refined, the past and the present. That's what makes your home yours and personal.
